about

The name Hans Berg means different things depending on who you ask - music fans know him as a renowned composer & electronic musician whose incendiary live set has taken him all over the world. To fine art fans, he’s best known for his work with Nathalie Djurberg - the duo use sculpture, animation, and sound to create transgressive and captivating installations that have been shown at MoMA, the Guggenheim, Art Basel Miami, the Baltimore Museum Of Art, the Venice Biennale, and more. His latest project, Waypoints, is a collection of his musical compositions for these installations, presented for the first time outside of the museum/gallery setting. The Clearing will be the first single, and the digital album will consist of The Clearing, Ghost Band, Waterfalls and Trance, available for purchase alongside a series of corresponding art prints.

Art - and perhaps music most of all - has a unique power to return us to nature. Berg’s work (both with Djurberg and alone) has always been an exploration of this power - as a musician, he’s known for his unique brand of organic, hypnotic techno. His debut release on 2MR, 2019’s Sounds Of The Forest Forgotten, fused that signature techno with textural ambient compositions recorded in the Swedish countryside. The result was an album that resonates on both a conscious and a primal level, beloved equally for its technical talent and its distinct humanity. Waypoints is a further plunge into the natural world - each composition is a lush soundscape that, because of its place in the larger art piece, was designed to be a wholly immersive experience.

The Clearing, originally debuted in 2015 as part of the exhibition Flickers of Day and Night at Denmark’s ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum, consisted of larger-than-life spinning daisy sculptures surrounded by Djurberg’s signature claymation animations. Berg’s sound installation transforms from an ominous yet alluring pan flute composition into an otherworldly synth melody, underscored by a sticky echo tone and the occasional bird call. The effect is an almost unsettling invitation into the artists’ seemingly innocent forest, only to be plunged into the transgressive animations as the music transforms.

Ghost Band, originally composed for an exhibition in Austria, and used in the Ryan McGinley-directed documentary of Berg and Djurberg’s AR installation for Apple’s 2019 [AR]T Walk series (also featuring Nick Cave, Cao Fei, John Giorno, Pipilotti Rist and more) is a hypnotic percussive march. The soundscape, hidden, and not seen, at the periphery of the exhibition, has a bewitching effect, inviting the unwitting viewer to join a ghost parade.

2015’s Waterfalls was the sound component to a series of video animations of three different black charcoal waterfall drawings. A crescendo of choir and strings mirror the color filters on the screens, transporting the viewer in and out of focus as the music shifts from shimmering drones to plucked strings and bubbly synths.

Trance, originally created in 2017 as a 160-speaker surround sound outdoor installation for Art Basel Miami, is a perfect fusion of the ambient and organic, with the electronic and manufactured. Inspired equally by shamanic ritual and harsh techno, Berg intended the piece to feel like “a journey through time and space that still maintains a very simple core.”

For those who’ve been unable to attend one of these exhibitions, the release of Waypoints has made Berg and Djurberg’s work more accessible. The fan who might have been limited by distance or financial cost can now invite a piece of the work into their home, via the music as well as the limited edition art prints that will accompany each release. Moreover, the Waypoints NFT is a more literal instance of this democratizing turn. Taken together, all of these components represent a bridging of the gap for Berg between his artistic and musical projects.

It’s somewhat ironic, given the project’s roots, that Berg chose to name this new collection Waypoints. The term connotes a point in physical space, something these compositions depended upon in their original exhibited form. Divorced from their spatial context as they are now, how should they be approached? A clue lies in another definition - a waypoint can also be a stopping point, or a place where a course is changed. Maybe, then, we can treat these songs as such - moments to pause and reflect on our relationship to the space around us, and to the natural world at large, before resuming the pace of our day to day.

about

Hans Berg Stockholm, Sweden

Hypnotically balancing between techno and house, the musical language of Hans Berg is distinct: playing with hyper-modern synthetic sounds, created from both hardware and software, Hans very much encourages himself (and his machines) to go off the beaten track. ... more
